Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme under Grant Agreement Nº 101246216, SG-SKILL will run for 48 months from December 2025. The project brings together 15 partners from 8 European countries and is coordinated by Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Spain).
Brussels, February 2026 – SG-SKILL (Skill-based education for smart-grids job profiles) aims to address current and future skills needs in the Smart Grids sector, supporting Europe’s digital and green transition. As electricity networks become increasingly digital, flexible and interconnected, the project seeks to ensure that the workforce is equipped with the right technical, digital and transversal skills to design, operate and manage the grids of the future.
The project was officially launched during its kick-off meeting in Madrid, Spain, on 29 January 2026, bringing together all consortium partners to align on objectives, work plan and next steps. Over its lifetime, SG-SKILL will foster strong cooperation between higher education institutions, vocational education and training (VET) providers, research organisations, industry stakeholders and sectoral associations across Europe.
About the project
The rapid transformation of the European energy system is reshaping the electricity sector and creating new occupational profiles, while significantly changing existing ones. The integration of renewable energy sources, digital technologies, automation, cybersecurity and data-driven solutions is increasing the demand for highly skilled professionals in Smart Grids. However, skill gaps and mismatches remain a major challenge for the sector.
SG-SKILL aims to address this challenge by identifying emerging skills needs, updating job profiles and developing innovative education and training programmes aligned with real industry requirements. The project will design, adapt and deliver curricula for both higher education and VET, supporting the upskilling and reskilling of the existing workforce as well as the training of future professionals entering the energy sector.
Building on the results and lessons learned from the Erasmus+ EDDIE project, SG-SKILL will contribute to the development of a long-term, sustainable skills strategy for Smart Grids. The project is aligned with key European initiatives such as the European Action Plan for Digitalising the Energy System, the EU Action Plan for Grids, the Net-Zero Industry Act and the Pact for Skills.
Over the course of the project, SG-SKILL will strengthen collaboration between education and industry, enhance the attractiveness of Smart Grids-related careers, and support the availability of a skilled workforce capable of driving Europe’s energy transition and competitiveness.
Consortium
SG-SKILL is implemented by a multidisciplinary European consortium composed of universities, vocational education and training providers, research centres, industry representatives and sectoral associations from 8 countries, including: Spain, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
The consortium is coordinated by Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Spain) and includes CIEMAT, E.DSO, GAIA, iCert, i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes (Iberdrola Group), National Technical University of Athens, NOVEL Group, Padre Piquer Foundation, Politecnico di Milano, RWTH Aachen University, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, T&D Europe, University of Cyprus and ZABALA Innovation.
