On 20 May 2026, the SG-SKILL project participated in the ETIP SNET Regional Workshop, held at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia, bringing together policymakers, industry representatives, academia and students to discuss one of the most pressing challenges facing Europe’s energy sector: developing the skills needed to support the energy transition.
Organised under the theme “Skills for the Energy Transition – Upskilling the Southern Europe Energy Workforce”, the workshop focused on the future skills required to accelerate the digitalisation and decarbonisation of the energy system, with particular attention to the South-Eastern European region. Throughout the day, participants explored key topics including emerging workforce needs, current skills gaps, and the role of education and training in preparing professionals for the energy sector of tomorrow.
SG-SKILL played a central role in the programme. During the opening session, Dr. Carlos Mateo Domingo (Universidad Pontificia Comillas) presented the project’s objectives within the broader context of the Large-Scale Partnership on the Digitalisation of the Energy System, highlighting the importance of coordinated action between industry, education and research to address Europe’s evolving skills needs.
The afternoon session was dedicated entirely to the SG-SKILL project. Representatives from several consortium partners presented the project’s work on identifying skills gaps, designing innovative curricula for vocational education and higher education, and supporting the implementation of updated training programmes for the Smart Grids sector. The session concluded with an interactive dialogue with workshop participants, providing valuable feedback that will contribute to the project’s future activities and strengthen the alignment of its educational solutions with the needs of industry and society.
The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to engage with key European stakeholders working on skills, innovation and energy policy. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration in developing a workforce capable of supporting the deployment of Smart Grids, renewable energy integration and the broader digital transformation of Europe’s energy systems.
